Deformation-diffusion coupled analysis of long-term hydrogen diffusion in nanofilms
The absorption and desorption of hydrogen in nanomaterials can be characterized
by an atomic, deformation-diffusion coupled process with a time scale of the order of seconds
to hours. This time scale is beyond the time windows of conventional atomistic computational
models such as molecular dynamics (MD) and transition state theory based accelerated MD.
In this paper, we present a novel, deformation-diffusion coupled computational model basing
on non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, which allows long-term simulation of hydrogen absorption and desorption at atomic scale. Specifically, we propose a carefully designed trial
Hamiltonian in order to construct our meanfield based approximation, then apply it to investigate the palladium-hydrogen (Pd-H) system. Specifically, here we combine the meanfield model
with a discrete kinetic law for hydrogen diffusion in palladium nanofilms. This combination in
practice defines the evolution of hydrogen atomic fractions and lattice constants, which facilitates the characterization of the deformation-diffusion process of hydrogen over both space and
time. Using the embedded atom model (EAM) potential, we investigate the deformation-diffusion problem of hydrogen desorption and absorption in palladium nanofilms and compare our
results with experiments both in equilibrium and non-equilibrium cases
Atomistic-scale model for the numerical analysis of the hydrogen diffusion on magnesium alloys
Magnesium (Mg) structural alloys offer desirable properties such as low density, machinability, and high specific strength. These properties make Mg alloys advantageous for use in many structural applications but also for applications as a hydrogen storage material due to the favorable cost and high gravimetric and volumetric densities of hydrogen.
However, the susceptibility of Mg alloys to hydrogen embrittlement phenomena can lead to low ductility and low fracture toughness at room temperature, which may hinder their potential applications. Therefore, information about the behavior of magnesium and its hydrides under different pressure-temperature conditions is highly required. A theoretical framework for the simulation of hydrogen diffusion in Mg based on fully atomistic calculations using the Diffusive Molecular Dynamics (DMD) is proposed. Our model consists of the resolution of a Thermo-ChemoMechanical (TMC) coupled problem solved thorough a staggered scheme. On the one hand, the thermomechanical part considers a thermalized Angular Dependent Potential (ADP) which is best suited to model the phase transition of Mg (bcc↔hcp) caused by the formation of MgH₂ at finite temperature. And, on the other hand, the chemical problem, which drives the time evolution, is solved by a diffusion equation calibrated with macroscopic information
Stability of asymmetric grain boundaries in graphene
In the field of electronics, due to its excellent mechanical and electrical properties,
graphene has become the most promising material for the production of next generation thin
and flexible graphene-based electronic components. In this work, we present an assessment
of the thermal stability and dynamics of asymmetric grain boundaries in graphene for different
misorientation angles at finite temperature and up to extremely high temperatures. In particular,
we have focused on configurations with misorientation angle of 16.1◦
, 30◦ and 38.2◦
. In contrast
to pristine defect-free graphene, which has no band-gap and therefore is of limited use for
semiconductor-based electronics, it has been shown theoretically that line defects in graphene
might insert transport gaps, opening up the possibility of device applications based on the
structural engineering of graphene boundaries
Time harmonic and static crack problems in 3-D transversely isotropic bodies
Boundary Elements XXVI, ISBN 1-85312-708-6Three dimensional crack problems in transversely isotropic solids under static and
time harmonic dynamic loading conditions are studied in this paper using a mixed
BE approach. Hypersingular and strongly singular kernels appearing in the formulation
are regularized prior to any discretization. Two different crack geometries
are studied. Stress Intensity Factors are computed from the crack opening displacements
at quarter-point quadratic elements. The results obtained in this paper show
a good agreement with other results. The number of elements required is rather
small.
los que no existe solución previa conocida por los autoresResults for severa! problems of time harmonic Fracture Mechanics in transversely isotropic
solids are presented in this paper. A Mixed Boundary Element Formulation developed by
the authors has been used in order to obtain these results. Only the crack surface and the
externa! boundary need to be discretized. Results obtained for sorne simple problems are
compared with those obtained by other authors. Then, other interesting and more complex
problems, for which no previous results are known by the authors, are solved.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología DPI2000-12l 7-C02-0lMinisterio de Ciencia y Tecnología DPI2001-2377-C02-0
Analysis of the tensile fracture properties of ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete with different types of steel fibers by X-ray tomography
This study is concerned with the analysis of the tensile properties of an ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete manufactured with short and long steel fibers. The analysis involve using different techniques - from mechanical tests to X-ray computed tomography - to relate the observed variation of the mechanical properties of the mixes with their porosity. A comprehensive study of the porosity distribution was conducted on the basis of the analysis of X-ray computed tomography images and porosimetry. The study shows the influence of the type of fiber used in the reinforcement on the pore size and distribution of the concrete matrix and consequently on its tensile properties. The tensile properties are obtained with an inverse analysis method available in the literature that yielded the first-cracking tensile strength (f t ) and the ultimate tensile strength (f tu ) and related with the inner structure of the concrete matrix. Our results prove that the tensile properties, especially the first-cracking strength, vary depending on the fibers used. These findings help mix designers make a decision about the type of fibers that should be used when a high first-cracking tensile strength is needed and make it possible to quantify the effect of the fiber.
Steric Interference in Bilayer Graphene with Point Dislocations
We present evidence of strong steric interference in bilayer graphene containing offset point
dislocations. Calculations are carried out with Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel
Simulator (LAMMPS) using the Long-Range Carbon Bond-Order Potential (LCBOP) potential of
Los et al.. We start by validating the potential in the harmonic response by comparing the predicted
phonon dispersion curves to experimental data and other potentials. The requisite force constants
are derived by linearization of the potential and are presented in full form. We then continue to
validate the potential in applications involving the formation of dislocation dipoles and quadrupoles
in monolayer configurations. Finally, we evaluate a number of dislocation quadrupole configurations
in monolayer and bilayer graphene and document strong steric interactions due to out-of-plane
displacements when the dislocations on the individual layers are sufficiently offset with respect to
each other.Consejería de Economía, Innovación, Ciencia y Empleo de la Junta de Andalucía P12-TEP-850Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad DPI2015-66534-
